What a mindful walk is

A mindful walk is a short walk where the point is noticing, not arriving. You move slowly, or you stand still, and you let one sense open at a time. The farthest sound. A color you only see once. The air on your skin. There is no distance to cover and nothing to finish.

Most of us already walk every day. This is the same walk, with your attention turned outward. A few minutes of it can change the shape of an afternoon.

The tool above builds a coherent sequence for you. It opens in stillness, moves through the senses, and closes by asking you to carry one thing out. You never have to decide what comes next.

How to use it

  1. 1

Pick three, five, or ten minutes. Three is a real walk. Start there if you are unsure.

  2. 2

Tell it where you are, or skip it. The setting only tunes which invitations fit the place.

  3. 3

Press start and put the screen away. Each prompt holds for a while, then the next one arrives on its own.

  4. 4

When something pulls your attention, stay with it. Tap next when you are ready to move on.

  5. 5

At the end, pick one thing to carry with you. That is the whole practice.

Things to notice on a walk

Every prompt the tool uses is hand-written and grouped by sense. You can read the whole library, 45 invitations in all, and take any of them out on your own walk.

Questions

What is a mindful walk?

A short walk where the point is noticing rather than getting anywhere. You move slowly, or stand still, and open your senses one at a time. There is no distance to cover and nothing to finish.

What should I notice on a mindful walk?

Start with sound: the farthest thing you can hear, then the nearest. Then look for one thing that was not here yesterday, and the smallest detail in view. Touch a few textures. Take one slow breath through your nose. The tool gives you the sequence so you do not have to think about it.

How long should it be?

As little as three minutes is worthwhile. Pick three, five, or ten, and the prompts pace themselves to fit. Five is a good place to start.

Do I need to be outside?

Outside is best, in a park, on a street, or in a backyard. There is also a setting for a window, so you can do it from inside when stepping out is not an option.

The same walk, guided in a voice

This tool is the noticing on its own. Rewyld is the noticing guided in a calm voice, tuned to your real place and today's weather. Five minutes, and your first practice is free.
