The radar sees the birds

Forty minutes before sunrise, a weather radar in South Carolina starts picking up rain that is not there. It shows as a ring. That ring is birds.

It shows as a ring, opening outward from a single point on an island in Lake Murray. The ring widens for a few minutes, thins, and is gone before the sun is properly up. Then the radar goes back to doing what it was built for.
The ring is birds. It is what a roost looks like from above when the birds in it leave in every direction at the same time, spreading outward as a circle and climbing as they go, until they are flying above or below the radar beam and the machine stops seeing them. The signature carries about a hundred kilometers from the center. Among the people who look for these, it has a name. They call it a roost ring.
Nobody built NEXRAD to do this. It is a national network of Doppler radar for tracking precipitation, and for decades biological returns were the thing you filtered out, the clutter between you and the weather.
Then some people started looking at the clutter.
In 2016, a team led by Eric Bridge published what they found in six years of archived imagery: two hundred and thirty-four purple martin roosts, located by a machine that has never once been pointed at a bird on purpose, then ground-truthed at fifty-seven sites by people who went and stood there. A later effort paired radar with eBird records across the Great Lakes and found the radar turning up roosts several times faster than the human observers were collectively reporting them.
The instrument was better at finding the birds than we were. We just were not looking.
The roost on that island in Lake Murray has been estimated at more than seven hundred thousand birds, which would make it the largest anyone has documented.
Where they are going
Purple martins converge like this in the weeks before they go south. Birds that spent the summer scattered across a whole region come together into one stand of trees, one bridge, one island, and sleep there in numbers that have no other occasion. In the eastern United States the roosts peak from late July into early August, which is now.
Then they leave, all of them, and fly to the Amazon.
Most of the eastern population winters in northern Brazil, in Pará and Amazonas, along the Amazon River. There is a twelve-acre island in the Rio Negro called Ilha do Comaru that has held a quarter of a million of them at once. It goes underwater every March when the river rises.
So the ring on the South Carolina radar and the flooded island in the Rio Negro are the two ends of the same animal's year, and the animal weighs about two ounces.
The part that is strange
East of the Rocky Mountains, purple martins have essentially stopped nesting in nature. Every eastern purple martin you are likely to see hatched in a box or a hollowed gourd that a person put up on a pole.
The habit is old, and it did not start with wooden boxes. Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw peoples in the Southeast hung dried gourds for these birds long before Europeans arrived, and the colonists learned the practice from them. It has been passed hand to hand ever since. There are people today who call themselves purple martin landlords and mean it plainly, cleaning and checking housing every spring so that a bird arriving from the Amazon has somewhere to land.
What we know and how we know it
Two hundred and thirty-four roosts is not a census. It is what six years of radar happened to catch, and the newer work suggests the documented list is well short of what exists. The Purple Martin Conservation Association runs a project to collect the rest, and it works the only way it can: someone reports a roost because they happened to be somewhere at the right hour and saw it.
That is the actual mechanism. Every roost on the list was found either by a machine nobody aimed at birds, or by a person who was outside before dawn.
The hour is the whole difficulty. Departure starts about forty minutes before sunrise, and the birds are not going by a clock, they are going by how much light is in the sky. Ten minutes before sunrise is when most of them are up. By the time it is properly morning it is finished, and the day looks like any other day.
